  Does it's job; could be better

  Overall works well, but two issues make this somewhat frustrating to use:a. Doesn't handle overlapping meetings very well. So if you have two things scheduled at the same time, it doesn't show both of them, and instead randomly picks one.b. If you ever connect to an internet connection with a sign-in gate (eg. at an airport), this goes OFF the hook! It pops up an error message saying that it was unable to connect. If you press OK, the dialog pops up again. It keeps repeating over and over, locking your screen's focus on it. You have to find a way to remember to kill it before connecting to a hotel or another foreign network..

  Doesn't work at all and..

  Hangs up with an https error. Have to kill -9 the process before you can remove it. So if you're a non-technical user, you will want to avoid this at all costs!

  Great for Google Apps on Mac

  My company uses Google Apps for Business for email and Google Hangouts for their internal meetings. I prefer using a 3rd party app for email however every email client I tried did not have the option to click through to the Google Hangout. Entry provided a simple and reliable solution to this issue. I'd hightly recommend.

  Does what it says

  I've only used it for a bit but it seems to do what it says. Pros:* Shows upcoming meetings.* Easily start scheduled hangouts.* Easily start new hangouts.* Doesn't consume too many resources.Cons:* If you use a dark menu bar, the popup colors look messed up.* If you click outside of the popup, I expect it to close but it stays open until you click the menubar icon again.* It does not show the date of events. Hindi actors photo gallery. It just lists the time. * It does not show which calendar the event is in. * It would be nice if it could also update the calendar entry to show the hangout link when you happen to be in the Calendar app. * The developer's website does not list an email address or support form for you to provide this feedback.

  
  

I've been on the lookout for a Google Hangouts desktop app for the Mac and there are actually few decent choices out there.

First off, I don't want to run a Chrome extension and I don't want to have to keep Gmail open in the background. That works for some, but it's either out of sight, out of mind, or it's jumping up in front of everything else annoying me. My goal is a Hangout app that can live without a browser.

Recently I found YakYak. YakYak is actually quite impressive. It looks great, works pretty darn good, and it's free currently. I accidentally stumbled upon it the other day and I've been using it ever since. So far, so good, however it's currently in development and does lack some features; like spell check.

How To Download Hangouts App

I also purchased Hangouts Plus not long ago. It's a pretty good app that looks similar to Hangouts. The main downsides are that it's a paid app, although not too spendy, and it has a weird 'feature' where it makes the active chat tab grey and background tabs white. This is backwards to me.

Flamingo was the hot new app not long ago, but recently it went free and then I think development stopped, or slowed way down. It's a decent app, great interface, spell check, and free. Definitely worth checking out since it's free, but it's starting to show the lack of updates as some things don't seem to work like they should.

There's also BetterApp and Chat for Hangouts but I haven't tried them. They look a lot like Hangouts Plus though.

Hangouts Free Download For Mac

Messages and Adium work with Hangouts too, but only for basic text messages. They don't include some of the bells and whistles and they don't do a good job at marking things as read in Gmail. When I go back into Gmail, I hate seeing unread Hangout conversations when I've already completed those conversations.

At the end of the day, there really isn't any great Hangouts desktop app for the Mac. There are some pretty good choices, but Hangouts is still best in the browser, even if some of us don't want to be locked in the browser.
